THE PRESIDENT OF THE DESTINATION VIKING ASSOCIATION ATTENDS IN CATOIRA THE TECHNICAL SEMINAR “THE VIKINGS AND THE WINE IN GALICIA”

On Wednesday 10th November, Catoira holds the thematic session “The vikings and the wine in Galicia”. The event will take place in Celso Emilio Ferreiro room, at the Town Hall of Catoira. It includes the presentation of Eduardo Morales book “The vikings in Galicia”. The president of the Destination Viking Association (DVA) Ole Madsen will attend this event, invited by the mayor Alberto García.

This event marks the beginning of a project that the Catoira Council has planned to carry out next year, and which includes the holding of a seminar on the links between the Vikings Route and the Camino de Santiago cultural itineraries, as well as a study to trace a Viking route between Catoira and Santiago de Compostela. The seminar will take place during the first week of August 2022, coinciding with the celebration of the Viking Pilgrimage and the Albariño Festival, both celebrations recognized as festivals of International Tourist Interest. One of the objectives of this project, which has the support of the Xunta de Galicia, is to take advantage of the relationships between these routes to promote the internationalization of the two celebrations.

  • 11:30 Presentation of Ole Madsen: Destination Viking Association. Director of the Archaeological Museum of the University of Stavanger (Norway).
  • 12:00 Jorge Vila Fernández: presentation on Albariño wine. Sommelier and director of the Galicia Wine Academy.
  • 12:30 Albariño wine tasting.
  • 13:00 Closing by the territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Pontevedra.

This presentation event is open to all residents who want to attend.

We also remember that the municipal public library has copies of the book.

The CACTO receives a great welcome from the visitors

After three weeks of opening to the public, the Torres de Oeste Cultural Activation Center (CACTO), is exceeding expectations in terms of the number of visits and evaluations. During this period, the exhibition facilities were visited by more than 500 people.

People who come to the center especially appreciate the possibility of knowing how the Viking Pilgrimage takes place. The visit allows an approach to the footprint of the Nordic peoples and to the Pilgrimage that is held every summer in Catoira, as a festival of international tourist interest, with a large-format video-production in the basement, which allows you to relive the Viking landing in the first place person.

The CACTO was born as an interpretation center for Torres de Oeste. An approach to the history of this enclave: an island at the mouth of the Ulla river that constituted the access door and protection border from the ocean to the interior of Galicia and the lands of Compostela “Torres de Oeste, key and seal of Galicia “.

With this look, a journey is made from the past of prehistory in the environment, the primitive commercial maritime traffic in the Castro culture and continued during the Roman Empire, when we already found the identification of “Turris Augusti” at the mouth of the Ulla river. In the high Middle Ages, the enclave took on a new role, with the reconstruction and reinforcement of the fortification, already named “Castellum Honesti”, to face the incursions of new threats from the sea: the “men from the north” in search of riches in Jakobusland – as Galicia was called -. Beyond the stage of Viking raids, the Galician coasts suffered from the Almorabid pirates approached by sea from the south of the peninsula. In this context, the figure of Diego Xelmírez emerges, who lived as a child in the Torres de Oeste castle itself, and who later, as archbishop of Santiago, gave a boost to the defenses of the Arousa estuary, in the Castelo de West, and promoted the construction, in the shipyards of the river Ulla, of the first fleet of galleys of the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, to defend and successfully combat the incursions on the coasts of the Galician estuaries.

The center has information panels, an exhibition of replicas that contextualize different stages in the history of the Towers, and various audiovisual units that allow an interactive and immersive insight into the contents of the exhibition. On the upper floor there is a space for cultural activity dedicated to presentations and workshops for school visits. Meanwhile, this space is used as an exhibition extension with a look at the cultural heritage of the City Council of Catoira.

Concello de Catoira announces the cancellation of the Romaría Vikinga

The local government of Catoira informed this morning about the decision to cancel the Romaría Vikinga 2020.

Due to the regulations issued by the Xunta de Galicia, which generate great uncertainty regarding the possibility of celebrating, from July 1, parties, festivals and other popular events, such as what is organized every year in this municipality of Catoira on the occasion of the Romaría Vikinga, the Government of Catoira decided to cancel the celebration scheduled for the first week of August. The organization and programming of an event of this nature, in which thousands of people participate, must be carried out sufficiently in advance with the minimum and required security and preventive measures necessary to face the health crisis caused by COVID-19, so the logical and sensible thing is to suspend this year the celebration of the aforementioned Romaría Vikinga, a decision that the Municipal Government takes for the mentioned reasons and in the exercise of an enforceable sense of responsibility. On the other hand, Catoira Council lacks the financial, material and personal resources necessary to enforce the regulations that could have been derived from a future protocol of action for this type of activity with a large attendance of people.

Since this year marked the 60th anniversary of the festival, and in order to offer symbolic programming to the local public, the Government is working on the organization of some small events, with very limited capacity.

The decisions made have already been communicated to the other political parties of the Corporation. The Popular Party showed its agreement and support for these measures.

VIKING DINNER

Due to the high demand registered of Viking dinner tickets, the capacity has been increased by 100 people. On Monday, July 29 from 10:00 a.m., they can be purchased at the Public Library. Until Wednesday, July 31, the tickets can only be acquired by people registered in Catoira and a maximum of two tickets per person.

REGISTRATION FOR THE VIKING LANDING

The registration period for crew members on the ships participating in the Viking Landing is opened on the 3rd of July. Forms are available in the virtual office. They must be submitted to the official Register by July 24th, attaching a copy of the DNI, either in person or through the electronic site.

MARKET

The period for applying for positions in the Romaría Vikinga market opens on Wednesday, July 3. Full rules and forms can be downloaded in the virtual office. The deadline is by July 29th, 2019.

The Tourist Office opens to the public

The Tourist Office of Catoira opened on May 14th. It is located at the entrance to the fort’s enclosure, at the Centro de Activación Cultural Torres de Oeste (CACTO).

Almost 170 people from various regions and nationalities (England, Belgium, France, Holland, Argentina …) have already visited the office since its opening, which is a very positive assessment.

The office is part of the network Turismo Rías Baixas.

Olympic medalists Saul Craviotto and Maialen Chourraut confirm their presence at the Canoeing Congress of Catoira

The Seventh International Congress of coaches in calm waters of Catoira managed to surpass 200 registrations, calculating the organization that the total number will be around 250 participants.

The event, which takes place between October 25 and 28, will be attended by the Olympic medalists Maialen Chourraut and Saúl Craviotto. It also highlights the participation of Jean-Michel Prono, president of the ICF Canoe Slalom Committee, which will focus its intervention on the technical evolution and video arbitration system.

Those interested in attending can obtain more information, consult the full program of reports and make their registration on the web www.congresocatoira.es. This was done by more than 200 athletes from 15 countries, including Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Palestine, India and Mexico.

Jean Michel Prono: “Everybody could take something from another canoeing discipline”

The International Congress of Canoeing Coaches is getting closer. It will be held in Catoira, Spain, between 26th and 28th October 2018. This will be the seventh edition of the congress, which primarily focuses on sprint canoeing but this year’s congress brings a novelty – a congress for canoe slalom coaches as well. One of the speakers at the congress will be Jean Michel Prono, chairman of ICF’s Canoe Slalom Committee.

Q: How do you as a chairman of the ICF’s Canoe Slalom Committee welcome inclusion of canoe slalom in the International Congress of Canoeing Coaches?

JMP: This was organiser’s initiative and it is a great initiative joining two Olympic disciplines in a congress. This is not only good to promote slalom better which has never been well presented at international congress. And secondly everybody could take something from another canoeing discipline. Some of the presentations may inspire the other discipline´s participants as long as they could attend. Probably we will have them simultaneously, but anyway – even the informal conversation between participants will be good. For me it is a very, very good initiative and it is in the Olympic spirit.

Q: You already organised seminars for canoe slalom coaches in the past. How important it is for the growth of sport to exchange the opinions?

JMP: The previous seminars we have been organising regularly after every season had two goals. First it was time to meet, exchange and work on the future evolution and every time we tried to have presentations, something that could enrich knowledge of coaches and team leaders. I think this was quite successful, but this one is new and will give another focus on the discipline. Personally I am very proud to have the opportunity to present the evolution of judging and the technology support. This might even inspire the other discipline.

Q: You have now mentioned you will be presenting in Catoira. What will be the main points of your presentation?

JMP: My presentation will be explaining why the discipline has been searching in direction of dealing quicker and better with the results management. And for doing this what was the factor which was the judging and transmission of judging. This has led us to video judging and different ways of inputting the penalties. The idea is to show from what observation we have been starting thinking in making evolution and that has probably also changed the discipline in some way.

Q: So, would you say this video judging system was a game changer for canoe slalom?

JMP: Yes, absolutely. You could see now. We are not using the paperwork anymore. We have freed the judges, we have now judges with different attitude, they are focused on observation, and they have time for a break from a very long concentration. And we could already see the affect of somebody only dedicated to the observation on the course and not to do some writing, alternating with the observation. We feel already the change. The other aspect of that is that we deliver the results, and you may have appreciated this as a media officer, faster. And I would say, we do sometimes still have some small issues, in a more fair way. So that was the main change.

Q: Do you have some plans to even improve the system you use right now?

JMP: We could already see an advantage of the system of the simultaneity of the penalty call, is how we could transmit this to the public. Now on TV you have the graphic giving you the penalty with the gate number, so it is quite comfortable, but on the bank for those people who come to see the sport, we have to provide them the information.

Q: You and your committee members are those who are, let’s say, shaping the future of canoe slalom. Could you give a little insight what are the plans for the future, where canoe slalom is heading?

At the moment no, because we are just initiating a forum of athletes and coaches, together for the first time. The idea was to start brainstorming, we plan to open the platform where all the community, all people could contribute. We still need to define the different items we want to put on this platform, but the idea is to organise a wide consultation and at the end make some statistics and give the line for the Olympic cycle. We want to include athletes, media, officials, organisers, equipment providers… If they all participate on the same brainstorming network we may have a chance to find a global direction where people look. It is very difficult, when you gather 30 people, you have 30 different opinions, but the idea of this platform is to define, design the tendency.
